Our Style Queen: Princess Diana

Born Lady Diana Spencer, crowned The Princess of Wales (once hitched) and remembered by millions as The People’s Princess, Lady Di seemed to wear many hats, (both physically and metaphorically) during her life.

From her humble beginnings in way-too-much-tartan to her iconic post-royal era, Princess Diana set the pace when it comes to ‘80s and ‘90s style, and with the latter decade’s current resurgence, her sartorial signature is just as relevant today. Here are some of the trends Diana owned that are as relevant now as they were in decades past.

Pioneering the activewear-as-daywear movement, Diana was often captured in bike shorts, oversized sweatshirts and tube socks - a look that has found traction recently, and for good reason. Not just a comfy choice for running errands or heading to the gym, this combo is a quick way to master the elusive I-rolled-out-of-bed-looking-super-chic-and-cool aesthetic. The trick to making it yours is to find sweats with retro logos or imagery (something Diana was a pro at). Needless to say, OppSpot has you covered on this one.

A master at mixing fashion genres, the Princess’s penchant for teaming tailoring with relaxed denim is one of our favourite Diana-isms. Although she donned this look time and time again 25-odd years ago, it’s perfectly in-tune with today’s ‘business upstairs, party downstairs’ mood, thanks to our Zoom-call culture (thanks covid!). This one is a cinch to DIY - simply choose a boxy blazer (preferably something a little oversized) and grab your favourite jeans. Finish the look with a basic tee and sneakers, loafers or court shoes - incidentally, another favourite of Lady Di.

Last but not least, we couldn’t miss an opportunity to mention Diana’s ‘revenge dress’. The original thirst trap, pictures of The People’s Princess wearing the iconic off-the-shoulder LBD went as viral as these things could in the analogue world. As always, she was lightyears before her time.
